Lumenate alternatives in 2026

Four apps do something close to Lumenate. Three flash your phone's light against closed eyes: Auralis, Calmind and 6th Mind. A fourth, Mesmerize, uses on-screen visuals instead. 6th Mind is free, Auralis is the cheapest paid option at a one-time $19.99. Calmind has the largest library. Lumenate still has the most content, the most ratings and the only Android app among them.

We make Auralis, one of the apps below. We have tried to write this the way we would want to read it, including where other apps are better. Prices are the US App Store's own In-App Purchases lists, checked on October 14, 2026. Tell us at support@vitaloom.xyz if something has changed.

Auralis

Best for: the core experience at the lowest one-time price

Auralis flashes your phone's rear light at a steady rhythm while binaural or ambient audio plays, the same basic approach as Lumenate. Two of its seven sessions, Wander (10 minutes) and Sleep (21 minutes), are free with no time limit, so you can find out whether you see anything before paying. The rest are $19.99 once, or $2.99 a month. There is no trial to convert into a charge.

Where it falls short: seven sessions is a small library next to Lumenate or Calmind. There is no Android app, no library of guided voice sessions, no AI guide and no light mask. The app is in English only. It is also new, with almost no ratings yet.

Calmind

Best for: the largest flashlight library with a lifetime option

Calmind, from Brainmedia, is the closest like-for-like rival to Lumenate. It uses the phone's flash through closed eyes, adds binaural beats, ASMR and nature sound. It builds a daily plan around eight light programs. It says it has more than 500 sessions, plus breathing exercises, sleep stories and a journal. Its first light session is free and the journal is free for good.

The in-app lifetime price is $299.00, but Calmind's lifetime plan has also been sold through deal sites for far less: we found listings between about $35 and $60 in 2024 and 2025. If that kind of deal is running, it is a strong offer for the size of the library.

Where it falls short: subscriptions cost more than Auralis's one-time price within a few months, there is no Android app yet. The App Store version had not been updated since April 2026 when we checked. Some of its program names, such as Migraine Relief and Neuronal Health, lean further toward health claims than the research on flicker supports.

6th Mind

Best for: free

6th Mind is free, with no ads and no subscription, which no other app here matches. It combines the phone's flash or screen with binaural beats and isochronic tones in 11-minute and 6-minute sessions. It can build a 15-day program from a questionnaire. It also offers eyes-open sessions, 40 Hz sessions and a mode for a 3D-printable headset that turns the screen into a full-field light.

Where it falls short: it presents itself in therapy terms, as relief from depression, anxiety, insomnia and burnout, which is a stronger claim than any study of phone flicker supports. It is also new, with few ratings. If you want to try flicker meditation without paying anything at all, it is the obvious first stop.

Mesmerize

Best for: guided meditation with visuals, eyes open

Mesmerize is not a flicker app. You watch slowly moving visuals on the screen while music and guided meditations or hypnosis play. It has a huge catalog, more than 56,000 US ratings and features such as offline downloads, sleep stories and a sleep timer.

Where it falls short as a Lumenate alternative: it does not produce the closed-eye color and pattern that brings most people to Lumenate. It is a subscription, with weekly, monthly and yearly plans after a 7-day free trial.

Lumenate Nova

Best for: brighter, wider light than a phone

Nova is Lumenate's own light mask, sold separately from the app. A mask spreads light across your whole field of view and sits at a fixed distance, which is closer to the lab setups in the research than a phone held in your hand. If you already like Lumenate and find the phone too dim, it is the upgrade that makes sense. It is a hardware purchase on top of the subscription.

What about the Dreamachine?

The Dreamachine, a flicker installation first built by Brion Gysin and Ian Sommerville around 1960, toured the UK in 2022 as a large shared experience. It works on the same principle as all of these apps, but it is an event you go to rather than something you can use at home.

Which one should you pick?

Whichever you choose, the same safety rule applies to all of them: none is suitable if you have photosensitive epilepsy or a history of seizures. Why closed eyes do not protect you.

Questions

What is the best free alternative to Lumenate?

6th Mind is completely free, with no subscription. Auralis has two sessions, Wander and Sleep, that are free to use as often as you like, with the rest available as a one-time purchase.

Is there a Lumenate alternative with a one-time price?

Yes. Auralis unlocks every session for $19.99 once in the US. Calmind sells a lifetime plan at $299.00 in the app, which deal sites have sometimes offered for much less.

Is there a Lumenate alternative for Android?

Not among the apps we tested. Auralis, Calmind, 6th Mind and Mesmerize are all on iPhone. Lumenate is the one with an Android app.

Do these apps all work the same way?

Lumenate, Auralis and Calmind all flash the phone's rear light against closed eyes, so the basic experience is similar. They differ in the rates they use, the audio, the length and number of sessions and the price. Mesmerize is different: its visuals are on the screen.
