Questions
The short version: dark room, headphones on, eyes closed, rear flash 5 to 10 cm from your face. Then let the session run. The details are below.
Questions
How should I hold the phone?
Eyes closed, rear camera flash facing your face, roughly 5 to 10 cm away and centered so both eyes get the light evenly. Rest the phone on something or prop your arm up, since holding it steady for ten minutes is harder than it sounds.
Do I need to move the phone closer and further away?
No. Auralis varies the brightness of the flash on a slow cycle, which reproduces most of what you notice when you move it by hand. You are welcome to move it as well, but you do not have to.
Does the room need to be dark?
Yes, as dark as you can make it. Even through closed eyelids, other light competes with the flash and washes out the effect.
Do I need headphones?
For anything with binaural audio, yes. Binaural beats depend on each ear receiving a slightly different tone, so they do not work through a speaker. Flow is the exception.
What am I supposed to do during a session?
As little as possible. Notice what appears without steering it. Let thoughts and images pass. Trying to force a particular experience reliably prevents it.
How long and how often?
Sessions run from 4 to 21 minutes. Longer is not better: a shorter session you finish attentively beats a long one you drift out of.
I am not seeing any patterns.
Check the room is genuinely dark, bring the phone closer and give it a few minutes. The geometric imagery usually takes several minutes to build. It varies a lot between people and between sessions.
The visuals are too intense.
Move the phone further away, or stop. Intensity is not a target to chase.
The flashing looks uneven or stutters.
Turn the screen off, make sure the room is dark and start again. iOS reduces the flash's output in response to ambient light and heat.
The light got dimmer partway through.
That is the phone protecting itself from overheating. Auralis lowers the flash rather than letting iOS cut it out entirely. Let the phone cool down and it will be back to full brightness next session.
Which iPhones does it work on?
Any iPhone with a rear flash running iOS 17.6 or later.
Is the app available in other languages?
The App Store page is in English, German, Spanish, French, Dutch and Portuguese, but the app itself and its spoken intro are in English.
Who should not use Auralis?
Anyone with photosensitive epilepsy, a personal or family history of seizures, or a known sensitivity to flashing light. We also advise against it for children and teenagers. Safety.
Can I use it after drinking, or on medication?
Do not use Auralis after alcohol or other substances. If you take medication that affects the nervous system or lowers the seizure threshold, check with your prescriber first.
Is it safe to drive afterwards?
Give yourself a few minutes. Sessions end with a gradual fade for this reason, but do not go straight from a session to driving or operating machinery.
Does Auralis collect my data?
No account, no name or email. The app sends anonymous usage events, such as which sessions are started and finished, so we can improve it. Privacy.
Does it treat anything?
No. Auralis is a relaxation app, not a medical device. It is not intended to diagnose, treat or cure any condition.
